Jhonattan Vegas Leads 2025 PGA Championship Heading into Third Round

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After two days of competition, Jhonattan Vegas is in the lead at the 2025 PGA Championship, standing at 8 under par heading into Saturday’s third round at Quail Hollow. Vegas, who is experiencing his first major lead, shot a second-round score of 1-under 70 after initially opening with a 7-under 64.
Despite a challenging round that included a double-bogey on the final hole,Vegas’s performance secured his position in front of a competitive field. “It means a lot, right? This is kind of what we put all those hours for,” Vegas said after his round, adding that he feels confident in his game. “Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to do it throughout my career, but you never know when things are going to turn your way.”
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is just three strokes behind Vegas at 5 under par, along with Bryson DeChambeau, who has also positioned himself for a charge. Scheffler remains optimistic about his chances. “I like the position I’m in going into the weekend,” he stated, acknowledging the difficulties of playing a major championship.
Vegas, who has been known for his powerful game, has gained recognition not just for his skills but for his captivating backstory. Originally from Venezuela, he moved to the U.S. in search of better golf opportunities amidst political upheaval in his home country. His journey includes significant challenges and achievements, including multiple tournament wins on the PGA Tour.
As the tournament progresses, the competition remains fierce with many seasoned players still in contention. Jon Rahm, currently at 2 under par, has expressed confidence in his improving form. “I feel like I’m getting better, more confident with the swing,” Rahm explained.
The stage is set for an exciting weekend at Quail Hollow, with big names like Scheffler and DeChambeau lurking closely behind Vegas. With only six shots separating the top 35 players, the final rounds promise to be thrilling. “I think it’s going to be a great test,” DeChambeau noted regarding the weekend’s set-up.
This unique blend of talent and unexpected narratives at the PGA Championship highlights the unpredictable nature of the sport. As competitors prepare to tee off on Saturday, all eyes will be on whether Vegas can maintain his lead amid pressure from elite players.
