Joburg Super Kings Secure Bonus Point Win Over Mi Cape Town In Rain Affected Match

The Joburg Super Kings claimed a convincing victory over MI Cape Town in a rain-affected match, securing a bonus point win in the Betway SA 20 league. Led by captain Faf du Plessis, the Super Kings won the match by 10 wickets in a commanding display of batting.

In pursuit of 98 runs in eight overs, Du Plessis and Leus du Plooy delivered an exceptional partnership, reaching the target in just 5.4 overs. Du Plessis scored an unbeaten half-century, while Du Plooy contributed with a quick-fire 41 not out. This victory moved the Super Kings to fourth place in the standings.

The match, played at Newlands, faced continuous interruptions due to rain. Du Plessis, after winning the toss, chose to bowl first on a pitch that presented uncertainties. The Cape Town innings saw Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton opening, with Van der Dussen contributing 16 runs before falling. At the end of the powerplay, Cape Town had reached 43/1.

However, rain interrupted the game at the end of the powerplay, resulting in a delay of two-and-a-half hours. The match was reduced to eight overs a side and resumed at 9pm. MI Cape Town resumed their innings with Rickelton and Liam Livingstone at the crease. Imran Tahir, the Super Kings’ leg-spinner, took two crucial wickets in his over, dismissing Livingstone and Rickelton.

In the final over, Kieron Pollard, the Cape Town skipper, showcased aggressive batting, smashing an unbeaten 33 runs off just 10 balls. This propelled Cape Town to a total of 80/3 in their eight overs. Tahir finished with figures of 2-13, while Williams took 1-15.

In response, the Super Kings came out with attacking intent, aiming to score the required 98 runs in 6.2 overs for the bonus point. Du Plooy started the innings by hitting the first two balls for sixes, while Du Plessis dominated from the other end.

Despite a brief drizzle during their innings, the Super Kings batsmen demonstrated a T20 batting masterclass. Du Plessis reached his first half-century of the tournament, breaking his lean spell, while Du Plooy continued his consistent form. The required runs were scored within 5.4 overs, ensuring a resounding victory for the Super Kings.

This win holds great significance for the Super Kings, considering the completion of this rain-affected match. On the other hand, MI Cape Town, despite being disappointed with the outcome, appreciated the Super Kings’ superb batting performance.
