Joel Matip, a former Liverpool centre-back, remains clubless since the expiration of his contract at the end of the last season. Known for his impressive runs from defense, Matip has attracted interest from several clubs, although no deal has materialized thus far. German outlet Bild has reported that Schalke, a club deeply woven into Matip’s early professional fabric, is eager for his return.

Bayer Leverkusen initially explored the possibility of acquiring Matip on a free transfer. Furthermore, Premier League club Everton was once rumored to be interested in Matip, creating buzz around a potentially surprising deal. More recently, clubs such as West Ham United, Fulham, and Bournemouth have entered the mix, making their interest known, reports Teamtalk.

Matip’s ties to Schalke are significant, having accumulated 258 first-team appearances before his transfer to Liverpool in July 2016. While Schalke has since faced relegation to Germany’s second division, reports suggest that club executives are determined to orchestrate a ‘mega coup’ by enlisting Matip on a free transfer. Discussions between Schalke’s officials and Matip have been ongoing following his departure from Liverpool, though a mutual agreement was previously not achieved.

The possible return to Schalke presents two pathways for Matip. He could commit long-term and potentially conclude his career where it initially flourished, or he may sign a short-term, six-month contract to keep his options open for a return to a higher-tier team next summer.

In related news, speculation surrounds Jordan Henderson, former Liverpool captain, regarding his next career move. Darren Bent, in a media appearance, suggested Henderson might make a notable impact upon returning to English football. Henderson, who joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq but left shortly for Ajax, is being linked with a potential return to his boyhood club, Sunderland. Bent highlighted that such a move would be a natural fit, considering Henderson’s age and continued physical commitment to the sport.

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville have lauded Liverpool’s commendable start to the season. Rooney expressed that Liverpool has left a strong impression on him in the Premier League this term, emphasizing the stability of the team’s defense, particularly highlighting the contributions of players like Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain as contract negotiations continue amidst interests from other clubs, including Real Madrid.

Liverpool reportedly have targeted Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen to potentially replace Alexander-Arnold if needed, as his playing style mirrors that of the current Liverpool defender.
