John Farnham to Narrate Memoir Audiobook Despite Health Challenges
John Farnham, the iconic Australian singer, is set to release an audiobook version of his memoir, “The Voice Inside,” which he will narrate himself. This announcement marks the first time Farnham’s voice has been heard publicly since undergoing cancer surgery in 2022. The audiobook is co-written with director Poppy Stockell, known for her documentary “Finding the Voice,” which chronicles Farnham’s illustrious career.
The memoir also features contributions from Farnham’s wife, Jill Farnham, who has written two chapters of the book and will also provide the narration for her segments. The audiobook, along with the hardback and e-book versions, is scheduled for release on October 30, 2024, as reported by Hachette Australia.
In an audio sample from the memoir, Farnham expressed his apprehensions about discussing his life, saying, “I don’t enjoy talking about myself, I really don’t. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an egomaniac, but dredging up the past and picking through what has and hasn’t been is just not something I’ve ever really enjoyed.” Despite this, he acknowledges the significance of the memoir, stating that narrating it was an emotional journey filled with laughter and tears.
Following the removal of a cancerous tumor from his mouth in August 2022, Farnham has largely remained out of the public eye, save for occasional updates shared by his family. His decision to narrate the audiobook comes as a surprise to many, given the health challenges he faced. Vanessa Radnidge, Head of Literary at Hachette Australia, commented on this, saying, “John is a born entertainer, and he never wants to disappoint his fans. Despite the challenges posed by surgery and radiation, John dedicated many hours in the studio to record his book in his own voice.”
Radnidge further praised the narration, noting that it captures Farnham’s distinctive showmanship and emotional depth, something fans will find deeply engaging. The audiobook has been highly anticipated by fans who were eager to know if Farnham would provide his own voice for the narration.
