Josh Hart Adapts to New Role Amid Early Season Challenges
CHICAGO — Josh Hart is adjusting to a new role on the New York Knicks as the NBA season gets underway. The forward, who recently finished a career season under coach Tom Thibodeau, is now navigating a shift in expectations under new head coach Mike Brown.
Hart’s minutes have dropped significantly from 37.6 per game last year to the mid-20s this season, and he has transitioned from a starter to playing a crucial role off the bench. “I feel like I’ve got the biggest adjustment out of the whole team,” Hart said after a morning shootaround at the United Center. “I’ve got to know every position.”
The switch has not come without challenges. Hart, who has played under seven head coaches in his career, is now tasked with understanding varied responsibilities on the court. This includes bringing the ball up, playing as a power forward, and even assuming center duties. “There’s going to be times when I’m bringing the ball up, times when I’m the five and times where I’m the four,” he explained. “It’s an adjustment, but this is my seventh coach. I’ve had a lot of adjusting to do in my career.”
Despite his willingness to adapt for the team, Hart admitted that the change has been tough. “It’s never seamless,” he said. “There’s going to be days where I’m just like, ‘Man, that’s some bull.’ But I’ve got to know this is best for the team.”
Injuries have compounded the challenge for Hart. After undergoing surgery on his right ring finger, he has struggled to regain his shooting form. As of Friday, he was 1-for-9 on three-pointers this season. Hart plans to rely on patience and consistent practice to return to form rather than opting for more surgery.
“I knew it would take a little bit of time,” Hart said. “Normally, you’ve got the preseason to get your wind back. I figured I’d give myself a week, week and a half of grace before I get too frustrated with myself.”
Team captain Jalen Brunson echoed Hart’s sentiments, calling him a vital player for the Knicks. “When he’s locked in and working on everything, and he’s focused, it’s a different Josh. He knows how to play winning basketball,” Brunson said.
While Hart has embraced his new responsibilities, he is still striving to find his rhythm in a changing environment. He believes that focusing on his strengths and contributing in other ways, like rebounding and playmaking, will help the team reach its championship aspirations.
