Joshua Jackson Discusses Popular Fan Theory for ‘Doctor Odyssey’
Joshua Jackson, the star of ABC‘s “Doctor Odyssey,” has expressed enthusiasm for a fan theory that has emerged regarding the show’s plot. The series, co-created by Ryan Murphy, follows Jackson’s character, Dr. Max Bankman, a physician on a luxury cruise ship. During an interview with TVLine, the 46-year-old actor entertained the idea that his character may be experiencing an afterlife fantasy, following a severe bout of COVID-19.
“I love this theory,” Jackson commented, acknowledging that a similar notion circulated among the cast during filming. Although he did not confirm the theory’s validity, he stated, “Only Ryan Murphy knows,” adding to the mystery surrounding the series.
The show’s striking visual aesthetics have led many viewers to speculate about its underlying themes. These include a scene in Episode 2 where the crew exits the ship by ascending a staircase enveloped in bright light, an image that many interpret as symbolic of heaven. Captain Massey, played by Don Johnson, also contributes to this interpretation with his remark that the Odyssey “is about as far from hell as you can get. This ship is heaven.”
The setting and tone of “Doctor Odyssey,” notably its extravagant sets, have further fueled the belief that the ship represents more than mere reality, hinting at a spiritual or metaphysical journey. This notion is reinforced by the very name “Odyssey,” a term often associated with an intellectual or spiritual quest.
Phillipa Soo stars alongside Jackson as nurse practitioner Avery Morgan, while Sean Teale appears as another nurse with a personal interest in Avery. Jackson’s participation in “Doctor Odyssey” follows his performances in other notable productions, including “Fatal Attraction,” “Dr. Death,” and “Little Fires Everywhere.”
Despite his lighthearted engagement with the fan-deduced narrative twist, Jackson appreciates the fervor and creativity it spurs among viewers. “I have appreciated the internet sleuths’ work on it and I think it’s great,” he said.
