Kalamazoo Public Schools Face Winter Storm Closures and Highlight Educational Achievements
Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) are among the educational institutions affected by the recent winter storm warnings and advisories issued for the Kalamazoo area. As of December 12, 2024, a Winter Storm Warning and a Winter Weather Advisory have been issued, prompting school closures due to heavy lake effect snow, gusty winds, and frigid temperatures.
Despite the current weather disruptions, KPS continues to highlight its educational achievements. The district comprises two traditional high schools, one alternative high school, three middle schools, eight elementary schools, and a preschool program. Notably, about 90% of KPS students graduate within four years, with most proceeding to pursue post-secondary education.
KPS is also committed to equity, providing an inclusive environment where each individual has access to resources and opportunities for success. The district boasts highly qualified teachers, with approximately 74% of certified faculty holding a master’s degree or higher.
The community’s support for education is further underscored by local initiatives and partnerships. For instance, the Kalamazoo Public Library, which often collaborates with educational institutions, has recently appointed Michael Cockrell as its Interim Director and celebrated the achievements of scholarship winners like Yasmeen Anis Shah.
