Kat Dennings Reflects on Early ‘Sex and the City’ Role in New Interview

Kat Dennings, known for her roles in Marvel films and the sitcom ‘2 Broke Girls,’ recently reminisced about her early career during an appearance on ‘The View.’ The actress, now 38, discussed her guest role on the hit HBO series ‘Sex and the City‘ at just 14 years old.

Dennings appeared in the Season 3 episode titled ‘Hot Child in the City,’ which aired in 2000. She played Jenny Brier, a wealthy 13-year-old who hires Samantha Jones to plan her extravagant bat mitzvah. The episode, named after the 1978 Nick Gilder song, explored themes of childhood and adulthood.

‘It was very interesting because, of course, I wasn’t allowed to watch ‘Sex and the City’ as a child,’ Dennings told the hosts. ‘And we didn’t have cable even, our family, so, I really had no idea what the show was.’

The actress recalled her initial confusion about the show’s title and content. ‘I auditioned for it. I was like, ‘What a weird show. What a weird title,’’ she said. Her perspective changed when she saw a massive billboard for the series on her way home from the audition.

Dennings’ brief appearance on the popular show brought her unexpected recognition. ‘After I did that and I walked into, like, The Gap in Pennsylvania, people were like, ‘Oh my God, it’s Jenny Brier! Like, give her the employee discount!’’ she shared. ‘I was getting discounts!’

This early role preceded Dennings’ rise to fame in films like ‘Charlie Bartlett‘ (2007), ‘The House Bunny‘ (2008), and ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist’ (2008). She later starred in six seasons of ‘2 Broke Girls’ and appeared in multiple Marvel productions.

Dennings appeared on ‘The View’ to promote her new ABC sitcom ‘Shifting Gears.’ The actress joked that her ‘Sex and the City’ guest spot remains the only project that earned her such immediate perks and recognition.
