NEW ORLEANS — Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is on the cusp of a historic achievement, poised to become the next head coach of the New Orleans Saints following his Super Bowl LIX debut with the Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Moore, 36, is the leading candidate to fill the Saints’ vacant head coaching position, according to multiple reports. The hiring process is expected to conclude after the championship game, as NFL rules prohibit teams from finalizing deals with coaches involved in the Super Bowl until its conclusion.
The Saints, who fired former head coach Dennis Allen midseason after a 5-12 campaign, have been impressed with Moore’s offensive acumen. Under his leadership, the Eagles’ offense averaged 27.2 points and 367.2 yards per game during the regular season, with quarterback Jalen Hurts throwing for 2,903 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
“He’s brought different ideas, different approaches,” Hurts said of Moore. “He’s been someone I can learn from and take things away from.”
Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert echoed similar sentiments: “He’s done a great job leading the offense, installing plays, and bringing confidence to the players. I think he’d make a great head coach.”
Moore’s potential hiring would also mark a unique milestone, as he would join Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid as one of two active NFL head coaches who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “He’s one of the best in the league,” Moore said of Reid, whose innovative approach has been a key study point for him.
Should Moore take the reins in New Orleans, he would also join current Saints players Taysom Hill and Dallin Holker, both of whom share his faith. Moore has often spoken about how his religious beliefs influence his professional and personal life, emphasizing the importance of family and maintaining a work-life balance.
“The ability to separate when you go home is really important,” Moore told the Deseret News. “You allow that separation to exist.”
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who has worked closely with Moore this season, praised his offensive coordinator’s abilities and character. “Kellen is highly detailed, loves the game, and works extremely hard,” Sirianni said. “He’s a phenomenal person and an even better football coach.”
If Moore departs, it would mark the third consecutive season the Eagles have had a new offensive coordinator, following Shane Steichen and Brian Johnson. Steichen left to coach the Indianapolis Colts, while Johnson joined the Washington Commanders as an assistant head coach.
Moore’s potential move to New Orleans could be finalized early next week, pending further discussions with the Saints’ leadership.
