Khama Billiat’s Return to South Africa for AFCON Qualifier
HARARE – Zimbabwe Warriors and former Kaizer Chiefs utility star Khama Billiat is set for an emotional return to South Africa on national duty this week. This comes months after he was let go by the South African club and subsequently revived his career with Yadah in the Zimbabwean premiership.
Billiat, who is regarded as one of the most successful Zimbabwean football exports in recent decades, previously played for several top South African clubs. His career highlights include memorable stints with Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kaizer Chiefs. Notably, during his time with Mamelodi Sundowns, Billiat was instrumental in their 2016 CAF Champions League victory. He also gained recognition with Kaizer Chiefs, where he became the highest-paid footballer in the country at one point.
However, following a contract dispute with Kaizer Chiefs, Billiat found himself without a club for an extended period. This situation led him back to Zimbabwe to sign with Yadah, receiving a generous offer that reignited his football journey.
Billiat later reversed his decision to retire from international football after being assured of an immediate call-up to the Zimbabwe Warriors. Under new coach Michael Nees, Billiat has become a key player in the team’s attacking setup.
Despite past grievances with his former employers in South Africa, Billiat is remembered fondly by many local fans. His return to play against Namibia in the AFCON qualifiers this Thursday at Johannesburg’s Orlando Stadium is likely to attract South African supporters with fond memories of the star.
Among those who have praised Billiat is Pitso Mosimane, his former coach at Mamelodi Sundowns. Mosimane lauded Billiat as “one of the best players I have ever coached.” He revealed that he had persistently encouraged Billiat to continue his football career, offering him support and a platform to display his talents.
