KILLEEN, Texas – The Killeen Independent School District Board of Trustees will convene at 6 p.m. Tuesday to consider several agenda items, including plans for a new sidewalk and potential changes to the school bell schedule. The meeting, which is expected to draw community interest, will take place at the KISD headquarters.
Among the key items is a proposal to construct a sidewalk on Chaparral Road, running between Aycock Middle School and Chaparral High School. Currently, no sidewalks exist on either side of this road, which raises safety concerns for students walking to and from school. “Walking along Chaparral is risky for students,” said Brandy Byrd, a local community advocate. “We need proper pedestrian access to ensure their safety.”
The lack of sidewalks has led to increased calls from parents and community leaders for immediate action. The proposed solution aims to not only enhance student safety but also address drainage issues along the road. During a recent walkalong with Commissioners Bobby Whitson and Louie Minor, Byrd noted that the road’s poor drainage exacerbates flooding during heavy rains, further endangering those traversing it.
While the sidewalk plan is a focal point, the KISD Board will also discuss revisions to the bell schedule for various campuses. No immediate decisions are expected on this matter, as trustees will gather input and concerns from stakeholders. “Adjusting the bell schedule could positively impact transportation and attendance if managed correctly,” said trustee Joseph Baez.
Additionally, the board plans to consider the purchase of an IC Corp C2608 school bus, pending approval. This purchase aligns with KISD’s ongoing efforts to modernize transportation and ensure reliable service for students across the district. The proposed bus is equipped with enhanced safety features and meets various environmental standards.
Parents and community members are encouraged to participate in the discussions, announce their concerns, and offer input during the meeting. “Community involvement is vital in shaping our school district’s future,” Baez added, emphasizing the board’s commitment to keeping the community informed and engaged.
