The recent termination of services of Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s cultural advisor, Iyosi Buzetsheni Mdletshe, by the ANC-run provincial government in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has caused uproar. The dismissal, done without consultation with His Majesty or the Royal Household, has raised questions of disrespect and lack of transparency.

Allegedly, the dismissal was a result of budget cuts within the provincial Legislature, where the budget for the King and the Royal Household is controlled. This move, coming shortly after a public disagreement between the traditional Prime Minister, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, and ANC provincial chairperson, Siboniso Duma, adds fuel to existing political tensions.

The DA in KZN has criticized the ANC for potentially using the King and the Royal Household as pawns in political games. They emphasize that the King should be the subject of the Legislature, not the other way around. The lack of consultation and disrespect shown in this dismissal only amplifies the need for clear communication and mutual respect.

Calls have been made by the DA for the Legislature to engage directly with His Majesty on sustainable solutions, such as creating a self-sustainable commercial agricultural industry on the King’s land. This, they argue, would reduce the dependency of the Royal Household on the Legislature and empower them to make their own decisions.

Francois Rodgers, the Leader of the DA in the KZN Legislature, issued a statement reiterating the importance of focusing on the needs of the people of KZN. With elections approaching, the spotlight is on the government’s actions and priorities, with voters expecting accountability and a government that prioritizes their well-being.
