What to Know About Good Friday 2025: Openings and Closings

USA, April 15, 2025 — As Easter weekend approaches, many Americans are preparing for Good Friday, which falls on April 18 this year. However, confusion often arises regarding the observance of this significant day, especially since it is not officially recognized as a federal holiday.
Good Friday marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is observed by Christians worldwide. Despite its religious importance, most businesses and government agencies in the U.S. will maintain normal operations on this day. While some states recognize Good Friday as a state holiday, federal employees and residents in many areas will not receive a day off.
In 2025, the remaining federal holidays include Memorial Day on May 26, Juneteenth on June 19, Independence Day on July 4, Labor Day on September 1, Columbus Day on October 13, Veterans Day on November 11, Thanksgiving on November 27, and Christmas on December 25. Federal employees typically enjoy 11 paid holidays per year, with an additional day off during presidential inaugurations, but Good Friday is not among them.
While the federal government does not formally recognize Good Friday, it is a holiday in twelve states: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas. In these states, courts and state offices will close for the day, leading to restricted operations for some businesses as well.
On a typical Good Friday, most banks, including major institutions such as Capital One, Wells Fargo, and JPMorgan Chase, will remain open, although hours may vary. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will also operate normally on this day, making it convenient for residents to handle mail and package deliveries.
However, both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will close on Good Friday, representing one of the few holidays observed by U.S. stock markets. According to U.S. markets regulations, trading will resume on Monday, April 21, 2025. In contrast, several international markets may also observe closures extending into Easter Monday.
Reports indicate that many businesses and restaurants will continue with regular hours. Retail giants like Walmart and Kroger, along with fast-food chains such as McDonald’s and Starbucks, will welcome customers on Good Friday. While public libraries typically operate during regular hours, it’s recommended to check ahead, as some might reduce hours or remain closed.
Despite its significance for many Christians, especially leading up to Easter, traditional observances of Good Friday vary among individuals and families. Those who observe the day often engage in activities such as fasting, prayer, and attending church services, preparing spiritually for Easter Sunday.
Micaela Bahn, a freelance editorial assistant, emphasizes that while Good Friday remains a day of reflection and observance, many Americans will use the day for errands or leisure activities instead. “It’s a unique blend of solemn observance for some and regular business for others,” Bahn noted.
As the nation anticipates Easter weekend, understanding the varying observance of Good Friday will assist individuals in planning their activities and maximizing their time during this celebrated religious observance.
