MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving suffered a torn ACL in a game against the Sacramento Kings on Monday, marking a significant blow for the team as it struggles with a series of injuries this season. Coach Jason Kidd called the incident a ‘freak accident’ and disputed claims that Irving’s increased playing time contributed to the injury.

Irving was averaging 39.3 minutes per game over the 10 games leading up to his injury, the highest in the NBA during that span. His workload increased following the Mavericks’ trade for Anthony Davis, which required him to take on greater responsibilities. Before the injury, he was consistently performing at a high level, averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists.

‘We’re talking about one play. Not many before that,’ Kidd said. ‘It’s a freak accident, that’s how it should be reported. We want our stars to play. This isn’t supposed to be a rest league.’

Irving’s sustained success was crucial for the Mavericks, especially with star Luka Dončić out due to his own injuries earlier in the season. As the Mavs neared a crucial point in the playoff race, Irving’s absence leaves them with a diminished chance of success.

‘Kai is our leader,’ Kidd added, referring to Irving. ‘He was playing some of the best basketball of his career.’ The loss compounds the frustrations for the Mavericks, who had already been without multiple key players. Anthony Davis only played one game for Dallas before being sidelined with a groin injury, and other players such as Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington, and Caleb Martin have also missed significant time.

The Mavericks faced the Milwaukee Bucks with only eight healthy players, suffering a 137-107 defeat, further solidifying their struggles as the season reaches its closing weeks. Kidd expressed disappointment over the persistent injury issues, stating that each time a player returns, another goes down.

‘It just seems every time we’re getting close to getting someone back, someone goes down,’ Kidd said. ‘Tonight, both Jaden Hardy and Kyrie go down, and we’re running out of bodies here, but guys keep fighting.’

The Mavericks have found themselves in a precarious situation after a hopeful run to the NBA Finals last season. With the current trajectory, they find themselves questioning both their short- and long-term future.

As the team navigates the challenges ahead, conversations surrounding the impact of Irving’s injury on the roster and playoff aspirations will dominate discussions among fans and analysts alike. In the backdrop, criticism is mounting regarding the team’s decision-making that led to their current predicament.
