Lakers Star Luka Doncic’s Status Uncertain Amid Injury Concerns

LOS ANGELES, California — The Los Angeles Lakers face uncertainty as they prepare for their upcoming preseason games. Star guard Luka Doncic, who participated fully in practice on Saturday, remains a question mark for the exhibition against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday, according to head coach JJ Redick.
Doncic, who has been resting following a busy summer with the Slovenian national team, stated, “We got to talk about it — JJ and my team. So, I don’t know yet. But I’m probably going to end up playing two games of the preseason.” Nevertheless, Redick confirmed that Doncic’s status is still “TBD” (to be determined).
The Lakers planned six preseason games, with three remaining after their matchup against the Warriors. After practice, Doncic expressed hope to return soon, saying, “It’s a big change. He’s a great player. He can help us a lot.” This statement alluded to the absence of teammate LeBron James, who is sidelined due to a glute injury and will be re-evaluated in three to four weeks.
James, who had yet to practice with the team, was diagnosed with nerve irritation, impacting his training camp. “Our mentality needs to be next man up,” Doncic added, highlighting the team’s need to adapt amid injuries.
In James’ absence, Doncic will rely on support from teammates like Austin Reaves and Marcus Smart, who are expected to see action in the upcoming game. But concerns remain about the team’s performance without their star duo.
Redick mentioned that they have not altered practice plans significantly despite James’ injury, as it’s uncertain what the starting lineup will be until James returns. “We knew this going into camp, so it wasn’t like it’s changed anything for how we want to practice,” he said.
As the preseason continues, the Lakers are focused on building chemistry and establishing their identity as they prepare for the regular season, starting on October 21 against the Warriors. They hope to have both Doncic and James healthy in time.
