Late Winner Secures Three Points For Dundee United In Highland Clash

Dundee United secured a late winner to claim all three points in their clash against Inverness in the Highlands. The match proved to be a familiar story for United, as they left it late to secure victory.

Jim Goodwin, the manager of Dundee United, made two changes to the team for this match. Louis Moult missed out due to a minor injury, while Craig Sibbald was unavailable following his red card in the previous weekend. This gave Alex Greive a chance to make his first start alongside Tony Watt after his recent arrival. Another change saw Chris Mochrie, who scored the late winner in the previous match, included in the starting lineup. Additionally, Archie Meeksion made his return from injury and was named on the bench. It is worth noting that nine DUFC Academy graduates were involved in the matchday squad.

The first half of the match was forgettable, with neither team creating any notable chances. The first goal attempt came in the 24th minute when Billy McKay and David Carson combined for Inverness, but Kevin Holt blocked McKay’s shot. Inverness came close to scoring from a corner, but Jordan Tillson cleared the ball off the line. Both teams struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, and the first half ended goalless.

Dundee United showed more urgency in the second half, with Tony Watt heading over the bar from Liam Grimshaw’s cross early on. Inverness had a chance of their own, as Max Anderson‘s deflected effort was saved by Benjamin Walton. Dundee United made a substitution in the 68th minute, replacing Alex Greive with Archie Meeksion. Meeksion tested Mark Ridgers with a volley, but the goalkeeper held on.

With just minutes left on the clock, Dundee United broke the deadlock. Kai Fotheringham flicked the ball on for Middleton, who delivered a precise cross for Tony Watt to tap in at the far post. In the additional time, Inverness appealed for a penalty after the ball struck Liam Grimshaw’s arm, but the claim was dismissed by the referee.

The victory sees Dundee United return to the top of the cinch Championship table. Their next match is against Dunfermline Athletic on January 27.
