Law & Order” Returns for 24th Season with New Characters and Storylines
The long-running television series “Law & Order” has returned for its 24th season, promising to continue its tradition of engaging audiences with contemporary themes and gripping narratives. The legal drama, known for its compelling portrayal of law enforcement and judicial processes, remains true to its roots while integrating fresh elements in the new season.
This season, the show introduces new district attorney Nicholas Baxter, portrayed by Tony Goldwyn, who took over following the departure of veteran character Jack McCoy, played by Sam Waterson. Jack McCoy had been a staple of the series since its fifth season.
Maura Tierney joins the cast as Lieutenant Jessica Brady, marking a shift in the dynamic leadership of the precinct. Showrunner Rick Eid, speaking with NBC Insider, emphasized that Brady, unlike her predecessor Lt. Kate Dixon, would be more involved in the cases due to her “near-photographic memory” and keen observational skills.
The series also delves deeper into the personal lives of its characters, an evolution noted by Eid. “It’s still Dick Wolf’s ‘Law & Order,’ and there’s still compelling, topical cases every week and ethical and moral dilemmas every week,” he explained, “but we’re trying to dig just a little bit deeper into our people and seeing how their personal lives intersect with their professional lives.”
Returning to the screen is Mehcad Brooks, reprising his role as Detective Jalen Shaw. Brooks shared his excitement about the show’s enduring popularity and impact, stating, “It is a dream come true. Reid [Scott] and I both grew up on the show.”
Reid Scott, who plays Detective Vincent Riley, noted that the series continues to address modern societal issues, such as artificial intelligence and geopolitical conflicts. “Nothing is off-limits when it comes to ‘Law & Order,’ and that’s something we are very proud of,” Scott commented.
Joining Shaw and Riley is a storyline involving Riley’s brother, which is expected to bring new challenges and developments. The season aims to maintain the show’s trademark balance of drama and humor, with Scott remarking on the camaraderie among the cast during filming.
“‘Law & Order’ just takes it to a whole new level this season,” Scott added, highlighting the influential nature of the series in sparking national conversations. “To be part of a show that can educate and start a national conversation, that’s where you want to be as an actor,” he said.
“Law & Order” airs on NBC on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET and is available for streaming on Peacock the following day.
