Legendary MMA Coach Duke Roufus Dies at 55, Leaving Lasting Legacy

Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Duke Roufus, a respected trainer and former kickboxer, has died at age 55. Roufus passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, October 16, 2025, according to Scott Joffe, a head coach at Roufusport MMA Academy.
Joffe shared the news on Facebook, expressing the shock felt throughout the martial arts community. “Today, the Roufusport family and martial arts world was stunned by the heartbreaking news that Duke Roufus, world-renowned top MMA coach, founder, and namesake of Roufusport MMA Academy, passed away peacefully in his sleep,” Joffe wrote.
Roufus was known not just for his accomplishments as a celebrated trainer but also for his role as a mentor and friend. Joffe noted that Roufus’s influence transformed the landscape of mixed martial arts. “His knowledge, charisma, and passion inspired countless fighters to reach heights they never imagined possible,” he added.
Roufus gained early fame through a successful kickboxing career, fighting alongside his brother Rick Roufus and winning multiple titles. He transitioned to coaching full-time after his competitive career ended in 2008, establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches at Roufusport in Wisconsin.
Throughout his career, Roufus trained numerous champions, including Anthony Pettis and Sergio Pettis, as well as prominent fighters Ben Rothwell, Ben Askren, and Tyron Woodley. He also helped support CM Punk during his transition from professional wrestling to MMA.
A statement from Roufusport emphasized that while the loss is profound, Duke’s legacy will continue. “Though we grieve deeply, Roufusport MMA Academy will continue forward, driven by Duke’s enduring philosophy and commitment to excellence,” it read. His impact will live on through the fighters and coaches trained in his program.
