Detroit, MI — The Detroit Lions are nearing a deal with veteran cornerback that is expected to take effect in 2025, according to reports from the Free Press. Sources indicate that the agreement may include $32 million guaranteed, as stated by Fox Sports.

The 28-year-old cornerback had a productive last season, registering 64 tackles. He will be stepping in for Carlton Davis III, who reportedly agreed to a deal mere moments before the announcement was made.

Over seven seasons, the cornerback has recorded six career interceptions. He began his NFL journey with the San Francisco 49ers, drafted in the fifth round in 2018, and spent two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Most recently, he had a starting role with the New York Jets, participating in 46 games as part of one of the league’s top defenses.

As news of the impending deal broke, the player tweeted “Detroit!!” but quickly deleted the post. The official signing period for pending free agents opens at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, following the opening of a legal negotiating window on Monday at noon.

The Lions, who finished last season with an impressive 15-2 record, aim to build on their regular-season success and make a deeper playoff run after their disappointing playoff exit. They were upset in the first round of the NFC playoffs, following what was the franchise’s best regular season.

This offseason has seen significant turnover, with both offensive and defensive coordinators departing for head coaching roles. The Lions’ former offensive coordinator has moved within the division to lead the Chicago Bears, while the defensive coordinator took over for the New York Jets.

General Manager Brad Holmes will have the challenge of enhancing the roster while managing players drafted in previous years. He acknowledged at the NFL Combine that bringing in a high-caliber pass rusher to complement Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill, once he returns from an ACL injury, is unlikely.

With top defensive targets such as Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett signing new contracts with their teams, bolstering the defense has become a priority for the Lions. Simultaneously, maintaining the strength of the offensive unit will be crucial.

Holmes has already made moves, re-signing edge rusher, linebacker, and special teams ace while releasing another edge rusher. The upcoming offseason will involve balancing improvements in the NFL draft, free agency, and potential trades.
