Lions Tight End Sam LaPorta Out for Season After Surgery
DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Lions faced a serious setback to their playoff hopes on Friday when head coach Dan Campbell announced that star tight end Sam LaPorta is expected to miss the remainder of the 2025 season due to back surgery.
LaPorta, 24, was placed on the injured list last week, and although the team had hoped for a quick recovery, Campbell now indicates the likelihood of LaPorta returning this season is “very, very slim.”
“I think we would be fortunate to have a chance to get him back for the rest of the season,” Campbell told reporters. However, he also shared some positive news about the surgery, stating, “The good news is the procedure went really well long-term.”
LaPorta’s absence is significant for a Lions offense that relies heavily on his skills. He ranks third on the team with 489 receiving yards and three touchdowns, making him a crucial asset for quarterback Jared Goff.
The task of stepping in for LaPorta now falls to fifth-year tight end Brock Wright. Offensive coordinator John Morton acknowledged the challenge of replacing LaPorta’s unique versatility. “I mean, he’s a hell of an all-around blocker, receiver, he can do it all,” Morton said. “But he was really reliable on third down in the red zone, and that’s the biggest thing.”
The injury has come at a critical time for the Lions, who currently hold a 6-4 record and sit third in the NFC North, trailing the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. With vital divisional games on the horizon, including road matches against the Minnesota Vikings and the Bears, the Lions now face their toughest challenge yet without one of their key players.
