Lobos Face Aztecs for Mountain West Championship Bid
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico Lobos will face off against the San Diego State Aztecs this Friday at 1:32 p.m. in a pivotal Mountain West Conference matchup with championship implications. With a season record of 8-3 and a conference record of 5-2, the Lobos need a victory to secure a spot in the Mountain West title game.
New Mexico has been on a roll, winning five consecutive games, including a recent 20-3 victory over Air Force. Under first-year head coach Jason Eck, the Lobos have transformed from preseason underdogs to serious contenders, defying expectations of being picked last in the conference.
“This is the biggest game in University Stadium history,” Eck said. “We have a chance to do something special, and the players are ready.”
The Lobos are tied with Boise State and UNLV for second place in the Mountain West, and while San Diego State leads the conference at 9-2, New Mexico’s playoff fate will hinge on multiple results during the weekend. A win against the Aztecs combined with a Utah State victory over Boise State would ensure a home game for the championship next week.
Tickets for the game are selling fast, with an expected crowd of over 30,000 anticipated at University Stadium. “It feels great to see the community rally around us,” said senior quarterback Jack Layne, who has thrown for 2,271 yards this season.
San Diego State’s defense has been formidable, allowing only 11.6 points per game and boasting a roster with several potential NFL prospects. This matchup promises to be a test of wills, as both teams thrive on strong defensive play.
“This will be a physical battle,” said Eck. “We know what is at stake.”
A broadcast of the game will be available on CBS Sports Network, with Jack Gordon and Randy Cross calling the action. Fans can also tune in to the Lobo Radio Network.
