Louisville Cardinals Fall to Virginia Tech in Close ACC Matchup
BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Louisville Cardinals women’s basketball team suffered a narrow 70-65 defeat against the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday at Cassell Coliseum. The loss marked the Cardinals’ second consecutive road game in Virginia during a challenging three-game stretch.
Olivia Cochran, Jayda Curry, and Ja’Leah Williams led the Cardinals with double-digit scoring efforts. Cochran also contributed eight rebounds. Despite shooting just 7% less from the field than the Hokies, Louisville struggled from beyond the arc, making only two of 18 three-point attempts (11%). Virginia Tech, meanwhile, capitalized on their opportunities, going 6-16 from three-point range.
Virginia Tech’s bench outscored Louisville’s reserves 20-11, providing a crucial edge in the tightly contested game. The Hokies improved to 8-2 at home this season, while the Cardinals fell to 13-6 overall and 6-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
“A lot of our young ones have never been a part of and never seen on the road when everybody’s cheering against you,” Louisville’s head coach said. “So, looking forward to that, seeing how we respond to that.”
The game, which tipped off at 4 p.m., was broadcast on the ACC Network, with Jenn Hildreth and Kelly Gramlich providing commentary. Fans could also listen to the game on the Cardinal Sports Network, featuring Nick Curran and Cortnee Walton.
Louisville now sits fourth in the ACC standings and will face the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. The Cardinals will look to bounce back as they continue their road trip.
