Mack Hollins: The Unselfish Heart of the Buffalo Bills
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – In a Week 17 blowout against the New York Jets, backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw a short screen pass to practice squad wide receiver Tyrell Shavers, who turned it into a 69-yard touchdown. While the play itself was impressive, it was the selflessness of veteran receiver Mack Hollins that stood out. Hollins, an eight-year NFL veteran, could have easily taken the screen pass for himself but instead chose to block for Shavers, allowing the young player to shine.
“I called a screen,” said offensive coordinator Joe Brady, “and you got a vet that very easily could have said, ‘You know what, I’m gonna go take that screen. Shavs, you go out there and block for me.‘” Instead, Hollins’ first block opened the lane for Shavers, who sprinted to the end zone, pointing and shaking his finger at the Jets’ defenders chasing from behind.
Hollins, who joined the Bills in March 2023, has become the embodiment of the team-first philosophy head coach Sean McDermott has preached since his arrival in 2017. Known for his quirky personality and relentless work ethic, Hollins has quickly become one of the most popular players in the locker room. His willingness to do the dirty work, whether it’s blocking or playing special teams, has earned him the respect of teammates and coaches alike.
“With his personality, with his work ethic, he’s such a selfless player,” Brady said. “He was the first one celebrating with (Shavers). That’s who Mack is. There’s a reason he was brought here.”
Hollins’ journey to Buffalo was not a straight path. After a career-best season with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, where he recorded 57 receptions for 690 yards and four touchdowns, Hollins had options in free agency. However, a conversation with Trubisky, his former college teammate at North Carolina, convinced him to join the Bills. “I said, ‘Bro, you’re signing with Buffalo. This is the spot for you,‘” Trubisky recalled. “I knew the personalities match, and he’d be great for this locker room.”
Hollins has since played more snaps (721) than any other Bills receiver this season, finishing with five receiving touchdowns and serving as the team’s top boundary blocker. His impact extends beyond the stat sheet, as he has become a mentor to younger players like Shavers. “He’s just a natural leader,” Shavers said. “Just the way he handles his business, it makes guys want to follow him.”
Off the field, Hollins’ unique personality has endeared him to fans. From his barefoot lifestyle to his viral Instagram reels, Hollins has become a fan favorite. His team-first approach has permeated the locker room, creating a culture of unselfishness that has propelled the Bills into the playoffs. As they prepare to host the Denver Broncos, Hollins’ leadership and selflessness will be key to their postseason success.
