Mamelodi Sundowns Triumph Over SuperSport United in Betway Premiership
The Mamelodi Sundowns began the defense of their Betway Premiership title with a commanding victory over SuperSport United in the highly anticipated Tshwane derby. The match took place on Tuesday evening at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. This encounter marked the start of their league campaign after a varied performance in recent competitions.
The Sundowns had a slow start to the season, narrowly securing a 1-0 win against Polokwane City in extra time during the MTN8 quarter-finals, followed by two consecutive 1-0 losses to Stellenbosch in the semi-finals. However, their fortunes changed dramatically with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Eswatini’s Mbabane Swallows in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round, where Lucas Ribeiro Costa scored twice. Mosa Lebusa and Iqraam Rayners also contributed goals, boosting the team’s confidence.
SuperSport United, nicknamed Matsatsantsa, had a rocky beginning to their campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 quarter-finals. The team is aiming to improve on their seventh-place finish from the previous season and sought a strong start, despite the absence of head coach Gavin Hunt due to suspension.
In their last season’s league meetings, Mamelodi Sundowns had the upper hand, winning one match 2-0 and drawing 1-1 in the other. Tuesday’s match saw the Sundowns continue their dominance with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United, thanks to an exceptional team performance.
For the match, Sundowns’ lineup featured captain Ronwen Williams, Mosa Lebusa, Rushine Coetzee, and Gaston Allende among others. SuperSport United’s squad included players like Ricardo Goss and Onismor Bhasera, although they struggled to gain momentum throughout the match.
With this victory, Mamelodi Sundowns demonstrated their intent to continue their strong performance in the Betway Premiership and retain their title. They now look forward to maintaining this momentum in upcoming fixtures.
