Manchester United Secures De Ligt Transfer from Bayern Munich
Manchester United has recently struck a deal to sign defender Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich. The move is set to cost the club around €50 million, which includes an initial fee of €45 million and an additional €5 million in add-ons.
Before the transfer is finalized, De Ligt will need to pass a medical examination. Thankfully, there are no expected hiccups with personal terms. If everything goes smoothly, De Ligt could make his debut for United in their opening Premier League match against Fulham.
The 24-year-old has spent the last two seasons at Bayern Munich, where he has played 73 matches and scored five goals since joining from Juventus. De Ligt is familiar with United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, as he played under him during his time at Ajax, helping the team secure the Eredivisie title in 2019.
In addition to De Ligt’s signing, United is also working on a deal to bring right-back Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern. This transfer depends on whether Aaron Wan-Bissaka successfully moves to West Ham, which is also being discussed at the moment.
With De Ligt’s arrival, he will become the second center-back to join United this summer, following the signing of 18-year-old Leny Yoro for £59 million. Yoro had a strong preseason debut but will now be sidelined for three months due to injury.
Last season, Manchester United faced significant injury troubles within their defense, and unfortunately, this situation has rolled into the new campaign. Manager Erik ten Hag is now uncertain about the fitness levels of key players, including Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, especially as they prepare for their clash against Manchester City in the Community Shield.
An interesting analysis regarding De Ligt highlights his potential and the fact that he has yet to fully tap into it. Ten Hag once called him one of Europe’s best defenders, showcasing confidence in De Ligt’s abilities.
Although De Ligt has struggled with form during his time in Turin and Munich, many believe he still has the potential to shine under Ten Hag, who could help him rediscover his best form once again. De Ligt has the makings of a leader on the field, and United will benefit from this, especially considering the recent departure of Raphael Varane.
As for his playing style, there is speculation that De Ligt’s arrival could signal a possible shift in how United plays. Ten Hag previously mentioned that the team would need to adapt to a more direct style, perhaps indicating a transition back to a more possession-oriented system.
Throughout last season, De Ligt demonstrated impressive passing stats, and he is known for his ability to improve the team’s build-up play from the back. Ultimately, his arrival could bolster United’s defense as they look to start the new season on a strong note.
