Manchester United in Talks to Sign Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu
MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United have initiated discussions to sign 20-year-old left-back Patrick Dorgu from Serie A club Lecce, as the Premier League side seeks to bolster its squad under head coach Ruben Amorim. Talks are ongoing, but no agreement has been reached yet.
Dorgu, a Danish international capped four times, has made 43 first-team appearances for Lecce since joining from Danish club Nordsjælland in 2022. This season, he has scored three goals and signed a contract extension in October that runs until 2028. His versatility, having played on both flanks, makes him an attractive target for United, who are reshaping their squad to fit Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.
United’s current left-back options have been plagued by injuries. Luke Shaw, the first-choice left-back, has yet to start a game this season, while Tyrell Malacia has been sidelined. Diogo Dalot, a natural right-back, has been deployed on the left but lacks the attacking thrust Amorim desires. Dorgu, a left-footed player who has even operated as a right winger this season, could provide the dynamism United need.
“United’s system requires wing-backs who can dominate an entire flank, contributing at both ends of the pitch,” said Mark Critchley, Manchester United correspondent for The Athletic. “Left wing-back is especially a priority given the lack of natural options.”
Dorgu’s potential arrival would mark Amorim’s first signing since taking charge. The young defender has been a standout performer for Lecce, who are currently just 10 points above Serie A’s relegation zone. His ability to contribute offensively, with three goals and one assist this season, aligns with Amorim’s tactical demands.
United are also reportedly exploring a loan exit for one of their current left-backs, as they aim to streamline their squad for the second half of the season. The club’s right-sided wing-back role has been filled by Amad Diallo, a natural wide forward, or summer signing Sofyan Amrabat, a versatile midfielder.
Dorgu’s potential move to Old Trafford could provide a much-needed solution to United’s defensive woes, as they look to climb the Premier League table and compete in domestic and European competitions.
