Marc Fogel Release From Russian Custody

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Marc Fogel, an American teacher detained in Russia since August 2021 on drug charges, has been released, the White House confirmed on February 11, 2025.

National security adviser Mike Waltz announced that Fogel was safely leaving Russian airspace with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. The release comes after negotiations between U.S. officials and Russia, though details of the agreement remain undisclosed.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken classified Fogel as “wrongfully detained” in October 2024. His detention centered around claims that he was carrying medically prescribed marijuana at the time of his arrest.

Waltz highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “Today, President Donald J. Trump and Steve Witkoff are able to announce Mr. Fogel’s release as a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine.” He described the exchange as a demonstration of goodwill from Russian officials.

Fogel had been serving a 14-year sentence during his time in a Russian prison. Following his release, he is anticipated to reunite with his family by the end of the day. Waltz emphasized that Fogel’s return is a direct result of the Trump administration’s leadership.
