Mariners Sign Infielder to $3.5M Deal, Designate Left-Hander for Assignment
SEATTLE, Wash. — The Seattle Mariners announced Tuesday they have signed veteran infielder to a one-year, $3.5 million contract, with an additional $1 million available in performance bonuses. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team designated left-handed pitcher for assignment.
The signing adds depth to the Mariners’ infield, addressing a key need as they prepare for the 2024 season. The infielder, represented by ACES, has been a consistent performer, posting an above-average OPS+ in five of the last six seasons. His versatility and league-average bat make him a valuable addition to the roster.
“This is a fine move if he’s expected to receive the same number of plate appearances as he has the last five seasons,” said one fan on social media. “That means there still has to be a follow-up move that pushes him to a part-time role.”
The Mariners’ front office has faced criticism for what some fans describe as a lack of ambition in the offseason. “We waited all winter for… THIS?!?” one fan tweeted, referencing previous signings like Tommy La Stella, Kolten Wong, and Jorge Polanco. “Paper bags will be standard issue for fans this year.”
Despite the mixed reactions, the signing is seen as a cost-effective move. “$3.5 million is a good deal for him,” another fan noted. “He’s a solid right-handed bat and an under-the-radar upgrade for the M’s.”
The performance bonuses included in the contract have also sparked discussion. Under Major League Baseball‘s Basic Agreement, incentives cannot be awarded based on statistical achievements, raising questions about how the bonuses will be structured.
The Mariners’ offseason moves continue to draw attention as they aim to build a competitive team around their strong pitching staff. Fans are hopeful that this signing is just the beginning of a series of strategic acquisitions.
