Marlion Pickett will conclude his six-season AFL career following Saturday’s game against Gold Coast at the MCG.

The 32-year-old expressed gratitude to those who encouraged him to persevere during moments of doubt regarding his AFL aspirations. He stated, ‘It’s been a good journey. I did not even think I was ever going to get drafted. To be drafted in black and yellow is an honour and to wear it is even more special.’

Reflecting on his past, Pickett noted the challenges he faced in his journey to being drafted. ‘I got overlooked for six or seven years and in 2019 I was about to quit all my dreams,’ he mentioned. Support from friends motivated him to continue his pursuit, leading to his eventual success.

In his retirement speech, Pickett thanked Richmond officials and teammates for their unwavering support, acknowledging, ‘There have been some really special people come through, and it has made my journey a bit easier.’

Pickett was selected by Richmond in the 2019 Mid-Season Rookie Draft as a 27-year-old from South Fremantle. He made a memorable debut in the 2019 Grand Final, contributing significantly with 22 disposals and a goal.

In addition to his grand final performance, he was awarded the Norm Goss Medal just days earlier for his role in the VFL premiership. He continued to demonstrate his abilities in the following seasons, playing a vital role on the team.

Richmond General Manager of Football Talent, Blair Hartley, recognized Pickett’s contributions, stating, ‘He is a team-first individual who always puts others before himself.’

As Pickett prepares for his final match, he does so as a two-time premiership player, leaving a lasting legacy at the club.
