Maryland Basketball Vs Georgetown Hoyas

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland — The Maryland men’s basketball team is set to host the Georgetown Hoyas at the Xfinity Center on Friday evening, marking the first home game of the 2025 season. This game will introduce Maryland’s new-look team to local fans for the first time under head coach Buzz Williams.

The Terps (1-0) come off a strong win, defeating Coppin State 83-61 on Monday. They showcased significant energy in their opening game, achieving a program record of ten three-pointers. Coach Williams noted, “I thought there was more continuity on both sides of the ball. I thought the energy was pure.”

Georgetown (1-0) is also riding a victory after beating Morgan State 87-70. Maryland and Georgetown have a long history, facing off 65 times since 1911, with Maryland leading the series 38-27. Their last encounter in 2016 saw the Terps win 76-75.

One standout for Maryland this season is forward Ja’Mal Payne, who scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds in his debut game. He played with exceptional physicality, a vital asset as he faces Georgetown’s size and strength, which includes two seven-foot centers.

Another storyline includes guard DeShawn Harris-Smith, a former Terp who transferred to Georgetown after the 2024 season seeking more playing time. During his two years with Maryland, he averaged 4.8 points per game.
