Maryland Terps Claim 18th Straight Nonconference Victory Over Towson

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Maryland Terrapins football team continued their winning streak with a decisive 44-17 victory over Towson University on Saturday. The win marks Maryland’s 18th consecutive nonconference victory, solidifying their dominance in early-season matchups.
Quarterback Malik Washington played a crucial role, throwing for 261 yards and one touchdown. The freshman began strong, completing 16 of 22 passes and rushing for 29 yards in the first half. “I’m really pleased with how he’s protected the football and the decision making,” said head coach Michael Locksley. “Pep [Hamilton] and the offensive staff have done a really good job of force feeding him things and getting him into rhythm.”
The Terps wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as kicker Sean O’Haire successfully converted a 37-yard field goal on their opening drive, just three minutes into the game. Maryland’s offense was relentless, scoring four touchdowns and two field goals on their first six possessions. Running back DeJuan Williams capped a drive with a short touchdown run after a 53-yard bomb from Washington to receiver Octavian Smith Jr.
Maryland took a commanding 34-0 lead by halftime, their largest since 2021. Towson struggled on offense, registering their first first down only near the end of the first quarter. Maryland’s defense maintained control, highlighted by a sack from freshman Zahir Mathis that added to the Tigers’ struggles.
Smith shined throughout the game, notching a career-high 103 receiving yards. “I didn’t know I had 100 yards receiving until the guys told me upstairs,” Smith shared after the game. “It’s a great feeling to have my career-high, especially coming off an injury.”
Despite a late-game push from Towson, which included a touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Andrew Indorf, Maryland’s victory was never in doubt. Defensive lineman JR Stegall nearly brought Towson into contention with a pick-six, marking a significant interception return for the Tigers, but it wasn’t enough to sway the outcome.
The final score highlighted Maryland’s offensive versatility and defensive strength, setting the stage for their upcoming Big Ten competition. “Today we were able to mix and match some personnel groupings,” Locksley noted, reflecting on the game. With their eye on the next challenge, Maryland looks to build on their performance and extend their nonconference win streak further.
