Masters Practice Round Delayed Due to Severe Weather Threat

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Augusta National Golf Club announced Sunday evening that the patron gates will not open as scheduled for Monday’s practice round of the Masters Tournament due to expected inclement weather and safety concerns. All patron parking lots will remain closed until further notice, and patrons are advised to avoid approaching the venue until more information is released.
The next update is scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday, as meteorologists have issued a FIRST ALERT for the Augusta area due to the risk of flash flooding and possible severe thunderstorms. The area is currently categorized with a 5% risk of excessive rainfall and classified as a Level 1 risk for severe thunderstorms, capable of producing damaging winds from late Sunday through Monday.
Originally scheduled for April 7, the practice rounds for the 89th Masters Tournament are anticipated to be significantly impacted by the weather. While player activities are set for Monday and Tuesday, Augusta National is also planning a full day of Masters-related activities for Monday, including a State of the Masters news conference led by Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley alongside press conferences featuring players such as Xander Schauffele, Justin Hastings, Hiroshi Tai, and Bernhard Langer.
This postponement represents a letdown for fans eager to catch a glimpse of their favorite golfers in action prior to the main tournament, which begins on Thursday, April 10. On Monday, a 99% chance of rain is forecasted, with periods of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms throughout the day.
While the weather is expected to improve by Thursday, with only a 5% chance of rain between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., Friday presents a different story with a 50% chance of rain starting as early as 9 a.m. Augusta National has the right to issue refunds or alternative compensation should the gates remain closed on Monday, a policy consistent with previous years when the practice rounds faced cancellation.
