Matt Chapman Signs Three-Year, $54 Million Deal with Giants
Third baseman Matt Chapman has inked a lucrative three-year, $54 million contract with the San Francisco Giants, a source disclosed to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
The deal, which includes opt-out clauses after the first two seasons, will see Chapman pocket $20 million in 2024, $18 million in 2025, and $16 million in 2026.
Initially, Chapman’s 2023 season appeared destined for greatness as he earned AL Player of the Month honors in April, boasting an impressive 1.152 OPS and 219 wRC+ during the month.
However, following his stellar April performance, Chapman’s offensive production took a nosedive, culminating in a .205/.298/.361 slash line with a meager 84 wRC+ and a high 29.8% strikeout rate post-April.
Chapman’s defensive prowess remains a highlight, despite some decline in metrics during his tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays. The four-time Gold Glove winner showcased his reliability at third base, tallying five defensive runs saved in the 2023 season.
Before joining the Blue Jays, Chapman spent his first five major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics, where he established himself as a solid offensive performer. His career-high 36 home runs and .848 OPS in 2019 earned him his sole All-Star selection to date.
