Matt Martin Islanders Farewell Game

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The New York Islanders hosted the Washington Capitals on April 15, 2025, in what could have been an ordinary regular-season finale, but for fans, it was anything but. This night held special significance as it was likely Matt Martin‘s last home game wearing an Islanders’ sweater at UBS Arena. With the team already eliminated from playoff contention, emotions ran high as the puck dropped just after 7:30 PM.

Martin, a fixture in the Islanders lineup since he debuted late in the 2009-10 season, has played 14 of his 16 NHL seasons with the team, becoming a beloved figure in the Long Island community. His impact is reflected not just in statistics but also in his tireless work ethic and leadership on and off the ice.

“He’s certainly earned everyone’s respect,” said former teammate Josh Bailey. “He deserves a big ovation for what he’s meant to the organization, to Long Island, and to countless number of kids he’s impacted.” Bailey, who knows Martin well after being drafted alongside him in 2008, shared his sentiments about the impending farewell.

Martin has achieved remarkable statistics throughout his career: 853 out of 985 regular-season games with the Islanders, totaling 73 goals and 84 assists, plus a notable 3,936 career hits—second in the NHL since the league began tracking hits in 2005. Despite a tough season where he has struggled to find a consistent role, the love and respect from fans and teammates echoed throughout UBS Arena.

Coach Patrick Roy named Martin an alternate captain for the game, even lending him the ‘A’ that typically belonged to Kyle Palmieri. “If this is his last game, the organization will be doing right by Martin,” Roy said prior to the game.

Amidst the preparations for the game, Martin reflected on his time with the Islanders. “I’ve been so proud to wear this jersey and be part of this team and community,” he said, visibly emotional as he spoke about his experiences with the organization and its fans. “The crowd at Nassau Coliseum, the energy they bring, is second to none.”

This farewell night was heightened by tributes from teammates and fans alike. Cheers erupted when Martin was announced as a starter, accompanied by chants of “Mat-ty Martin,” further illustrating the bond between him and the fans.

Defenseman Adam Pelech praised Martin’s influence within the locker room, stating, “He’s the best teammate you could ever ask for.” Teammate Casey Cizikas echoed these sentiments, highlighting Martin’s selflessness and commitment to the team. “There are not too many people like him,” Cizikas said. “He’s one of a kind.”

As the night progressed, the Islanders faced the Capitals, eventually losing 3-1. Despite the defeat, the atmosphere was charged with gratitude for Martin’s contributions over the years. Fans and teammates alike took the opportunity to honor a player who has defined the identity of the franchise during his tenure.

With the conclusion of this final home game, the long-term future for Martin remains uncertain, as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent. However, regardless of the outcome, the legacy he leaves on Long Island will continue to resonate among fans and players alike.

As the season draws to a close after Thursday’s game in Columbus, the Islanders and their supporters will carry these memories forward, celebrating the moments shared with a player who truly embodied the spirit of the franchise.
