Memphis Depay, a prominent Dutch footballer who recently joined the Brazilian club Corinthians from Atletico Madrid, may face the early termination of his contract due to financial difficulties at his new club. Depay, a former player of notable European teams such as Manchester United and Barcelona, moved to Corinthians in the summer but might find himself seeking a new club soon.

The primary cause of the uncertainty surrounding Depay’s future at Corinthians is related to financial issues involving the club’s main sponsor, Esportes da Sorte. Reports from Paulo Vinicius Coelho, highlight suspicions of criminal activity associated with the sponsor, which could potentially lead to the discontinuation of the sponsorship agreement. Depay’s reported annual salary of £9 million, largely covered by Esportes da Sorte, places him among the highest earners in the league.

Since joining Corinthians, Depay has played four matches, providing two assists. However, the financial turmoil may see the 30-year-old seeking another club soon, adding to his already varied career path across countries like the Netherlands, England, France, and Spain.

Depay began his career with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, achieving remarkable success with over 20 goals in a standout season that led to his transfer to Manchester United. Former United manager Louis van Gaal, also a Dutch national, was instrumental in bringing Depay to the English club. Although his time at Old Trafford yielded only seven goals in 53 appearances, Depay revived his career at Olympique Lyonnais in France, scoring 71 goals over four seasons.

Following his successful period in France, Depay moved to Barcelona under manager Ronald Koeman. His stint at Camp Nou lasted two years, in which he managed 13 goals in his debut season. Depay later joined Atletico Madrid, where he contributed nine goals in his final season before opting for a move to Brazil.

Corinthians may face a significant loss if unable to retain Depay, whose high-profile presence brought both talent and attention to the club. As the situation unfolds, both the player and the club await further developments from the sponsorship front.
