ATLANTA, Ga. — Residents of metro Atlanta and North Georgia are preparing for a significant rainfall event this week, prompted by multiple storm systems. A Flood Watch has been issued, warning of possible flooding as several inches of rain are expected from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service has extended the Flood Watch across numerous counties including Forsyth, Gwinnett, and Cobb, with projections indicating rainfall totals between three to five inches, and some areas possibly receiving up to seven inches. “Motorists should expect hazardous conditions due to standing water on roadways,” said FOX 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Stacey.
Beginning Tuesday afternoon, light rain is anticipated to transition into heavier downpours as the evening approaches, particularly for areas northwest of the I-85 corridor. “It’s going to be a damp day overall with continued rain into Wednesday,” Stacey added. Wednesday is projected to be the wettest day, with steady rainfall likely to cause some street flooding.
Temperatures will start in the high 30s on Wednesday, only reaching a high of 44 degrees, making for a chilly environment. However, a slight warm-up is expected on Thursday, with temperatures climbing to 54 degrees and partial clearing by late morning.
In the upcoming weekend, another storm system could bring additional rainfall and thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe weather alert for parts of western Georgia, including possible strong storms early Sunday.
The Flood Watch remains active until early Thursday, but updates on rainfall amounts and storms are likely as meteorologists continue to monitor the changing weather pattern. “Although minor flooding is expected, the risk of flash flooding remains relatively low,” said Stacey, noting that potential hazards could increase if higher rain totals occur in a shorter time frame.
Residents are advised to take precautions by clearing debris from gutters and storm drains and ensuring road safety during predicted rain events. Further weather updates will be provided as conditions warrant.
