Dylan Cease Pitching For San Diego Padres

NEW YORK — The New York Mets and Chicago Cubs are locked in a high-stakes pursuit of San Diego Padres ace Dylan Cease, with both teams vying to bolster their rotations ahead of the 2025 MLB season. The Mets, historically hesitant to commit to long-term deals for pitchers, have shifted their focus to rental options like Cease and his rotation mate Michael King.

The Padres, open to trading most of their roster except stars Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr., are reportedly weighing offers from both clubs. While the Cubs boast a stronger farm system, the Mets’ package of prospects, including Brandon Sproat, Jett Williams, and Luisangel Acuña, may appeal more to San Diego. “The prize for San Diego in this deal would be Alcántara,” said one league insider, referencing Cubs prospect Kevin Alcántara, who offers power, speed, and defensive prowess.

Cease, 29, is coming off a standout 2024 season with a 13-7 record and a 3.18 ERA, including key postseason performances against the Mets and Yankees. His availability has surprised many, given his age and lack of a qualifying offer. Meanwhile, King, also 29, emerged as a front-end starter after being part of the Juan Soto trade. Last season, he posted a 13-9 record, a 2.95 ERA, and a 4.2 WAR, making him a coveted target for contenders.

The Cubs, fresh off acquiring star outfielder Kyle Tucker and reliever Ryan Pressly, are pushing to solidify their rotation. Pairing King with Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele would create a formidable trio capable of competing with powerhouses like the Los Angeles Dodgers. “For a team that should be all-in this year, making a move for King makes a lot of sense,” said an analyst.

Meanwhile, the Mets are exploring other options, including veteran pitchers Nick Pivetta and Jack Flaherty. Pivetta, despite a qualifying offer, has drawn interest from 10 teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays. Flaherty, a former Detroit Tiger, remains a viable target for teams seeking rotation depth.

As the trade deadline approaches, both the Mets and Cubs are under pressure to make moves that could define their seasons. With the Padres willing to listen on most players, the race for Cease and King could reshape the National League playoff picture.
