Miami Heat Fall to Orlando Magic in Season Opener
ORLANDO, Florida — The Miami Heat opened their season with a loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night at Kia Center, falling 125-121 despite leading by eight in the fourth quarter.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said he saw positives in the game, noting that while he isn’t searching for moral victories, the team has aspects to build upon. “I’m encouraged by more things than not from this game,” Spoelstra said. “There’s definitely things that we can build on.”
Guard Davion Mitchell made a notable contribution, matching Tim Hardaway‘s franchise record for assists on opening night with 12, and adding 16 points and six rebounds. “I got a lot of scorers around me,” he said, attributing his success to teammates.
Newcomer Norman Powell led the Heat with 28 points, emphasizing the need for continual improvement. “I don’t do moral victories, either,” Powell stated. “Every game, whether you win or lose, it’s going to have things that you did well and things you gotta get better.”
Despite a strong start, the Heat fell short mainly due to the Magic’s late offensive rebounds. This issue has plagued the Heat throughout recent matchups. “That was the difference,” Spoelstra noted. “Close, but not close enough.”
While Kel'el Ware, who played only 13 minutes, was a focus, Spoelstra explained that it was about trusting the players on the court during crucial moments. “Kel’el will get there,” he added, committing to his development.
The Heat now look forward to their next game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night before returning home for a matchup against the New York Knicks.
