Michael Jordan And Wayans Family 1990s

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — NBA legend Michael Jordan wasn’t just known for his basketball prowess in the 1990s — he was also a frequent snack raider at the Wayans family home, according to a recent interview with PEOPLE magazine.

Damon Wayans Sr., 64, and his son Damon Wayans Jr., 42, shared memories of their time as Jordan’s neighbors during the basketball star’s filming of “Space Jam” in the mid-1990s. The Wayans family, who starred in the CBS sitcom “Poppa's House,” revealed Jordan’s penchant for their snacks during an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE.

“Snacks! So many snacks. Your snack game was off the chain,” Damon Jr. reminded his father. “Michael Jordan used to come over and eat all my snacks. That’s how good our snacks were.”

Damon Jr., who was around 12 or 13 at the time, joked, “He came over too much. Shout-out to Jordan though.”

Damon Sr. described the experience of having Jordan as a neighbor as “amazing,” but noted that it came with some challenges. “My friends would want to come over — not to see me — but to see him, to hope to get a glimpse of Michael Jordan,” he said.

Despite the excitement, Damon Sr. set boundaries to respect Jordan’s privacy. “One thing I really put my foot down for was don’t bother him,” he explained. “He moved in for the whole summer [next door] and I only went over to the house once, and that’s because he invited me in.”

Damon Sr. admitted that the fan in him wanted to be near Jordan every day. “I could see him from my window. I would see him inside. There he is, there he is, there he is, look, look, look, look, look, look, look,” he recalled.

Damon Jr. vividly remembered the family’s fascination with their famous neighbor. “I remember you guys Army crawled to the window to see him,” he said, describing his father’s antics on the living room floor.

Reflecting on his childhood, Damon Jr. expressed gratitude for the unique experiences he had. “I always feel bad when I hear friends of mine talking about how hard their childhood was because I literally lived a dream childhood,” he said.

“Poppa’s House” season 1 returns Jan. 27 for its mid-season premiere on CBS, with past episodes available to stream on Paramount+.
