Michelle Jenneke’s Olympic Hurdles Mishap
Michelle Jenneke’s Olympic journey faced a tough blow when she took a nasty fall during the 100m hurdles heats. The 31-year-old Australian athlete was off to a great start in her race but unfortunately collided with the third hurdle.
After hitting the hurdle, Jenneke lost her balance and fell hard onto her left side. Despite the fall, she quickly got back on her feet and continued the race, which allowed her the chance for a second shot at qualifying in the repechage round later on.
Jenneke explained that she felt something pop in her right knee just before the crash. Even with the pain, she felt proud of her initial performance, saying, “I actually feel like I’m in great shape.” She was hopeful she could still participate in the next round if given medical clearance.
Racing through the intense pain didn’t go unnoticed, as she also kicked down another hurdle but managed to maintain her composure and finish the race. Although she ended up in a different lane, she won’t be disqualified since she didn’t interfere with any other competitors.
Originally a silver medalist at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics, Jenneke has made quite a name for herself not only in athletics but also in the public eye with her well-known warm-up dance. Her electric personality has made her one of Australia’s most recognized track athletes.
As she awaits medical evaluation, fellow Australian competitors Liz Clay and Celeste Mucci are set to race in the repechage round, while other teammates like MacKenzie Little and Kathryn Mitchell are doing well, having qualified for the women’s javelin final.
The race was won by American star Masai Russell, further highlighting the fierce competition of the Olympic Games, taking place at Stade de France.
