Michigan State Athletic Director Alan Haller Announcement

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University announced Thursday that athletic director Alan Haller is stepping down from his position after nearly five years. Haller’s last day on the job will be May 11. Deputy athletic director Jennifer Smith and men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo will serve as co-interim athletic directors during the search for a permanent replacement.

University President Kevin Guskiewicz commended Haller’s leadership in a statement, expressing gratitude for his commitment to the university, and noting the success of various athletic programs under his directive.

Haller, who became the athletic director in September 2021, oversaw significant accomplishments during his tenure, including several Big Ten championships across multiple sports. These included men’s basketball, women’s soccer, and women’s gymnastics. Guskiewicz stated that a national search will commence to find a successor who can best adapt to the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.

Haller’s tenure was not without controversy. He made headlines in September 2023 when he dismissed football coach Mel Tucker amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Tucker later filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the university that implicates Haller and interim president Teresa Woodruff.

During his time, Haller also played a pivotal role in hiring Jonathan Smith as the new head football coach. Haller previously worked with Michigan State athletics since 2010 after more than a decade in police services.

Tom Izzo, a longtime figure in Spartans athletics, has been the head coach of the men’s basketball team since 1995, leading the team to national prominence. His partnership with Smith as interim AD signifies stability while the university navigates this transition.

Guskiewicz highlighted the importance of innovation and effective communication for the incoming athletic director, emphasizing the need for strong leadership in a time of change for college sports.
