Michigan Softball Sweeps Minnesota in Weekend Series

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The University of Michigan softball team dominated the University of Minnesota in a weekend series, earning wins of 8-0 and 3-0 on May 3 and 4, respectively, at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
In Saturday’s game, Michigan’s offense fired on all cylinders, scoring in four of the five innings to secure an 8-0 victory. Junior third baseman Maddie Erickson was a standout, driving in four of the first five runs. She went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior right-hander Lauren Derkowski notched her fifth complete-game shutout of the season, striking out two while allowing just five hits and one walk.
The Wolverines quickly set the pace with three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Erickson. They added to their lead with more runs in the third and fourth innings, culminating in a solo home run from a junior first baseman in the fifth.
Despite a brief threat in the fourth inning when Minnesota had runners on the corners, Derkowski responded with a strikeout to end the inning. Michigan also displayed strong defense, executing two double plays.
Sunday’s rubber match saw Michigan continue their defensive prowess, as Derkowski threw a one-hit shutout, leading the team to a 3-0 victory. Putz drove in all three of Michigan’s runs, beginning with a two-run homer in the first inning.
Throughout the game, Derkowski showcased exceptional command, striking out five batters over seven innings. Minnesota managed only one baserunner beyond first base during the game.
The weekend sweep improved Michigan’s record to 34-19 and 11-11 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines are set to compete as the No. 8 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament starting on May 7 in West Lafayette, Indiana, against Wisconsin.
