Mikko Rantanen Shines as Stars Approach Playoff Milestone in Colorado

DALLAS (AP) — Mikko Rantanen has embraced his new role as a Dallas Star, returning to Colorado with a chance to advance in the NHL playoffs. The 28-year-old forward notched his first playoff goal and two assists in the Stars’ recent win, bringing them closer to eliminating the Avalanche for a second consecutive year.
‘It’s reality, I guess,’ Rantanen said with a smile Wednesday, the day before Game 6 of the series. After spending the last 10 seasons with the Avalanche, including their Stanley Cup win in 2022, Rantanen was traded twice in six weeks — first to Carolina on January 24 and then to Dallas, sealing his move with a $96 million, eight-year contract extension.
With the postseason included, Rantanen has participated in 25 games with Dallas. ‘Settling in and playing with instinct is crucial,’ he explained. ‘The systems are now ingrained in my mind, so I don’t have to overthink my movements on the ice.’
Rantanen made his mark in Game 6 of last year’s playoffs, scoring the lone goal for the Avalanche against the Stars. In this current series, he assisted Tyler Seguin‘s overtime winner in Game 3, marking his first point for Dallas. Rantanen later showcased his skills in Game 5 with impressive passing plays alongside Roope Hintz.
‘He is settling and I think he’s a lot closer than the numbers say,’ said Dallas coach Pete DeBoer. ‘He played exceptionally well in Colorado during Game 3. He’s starting to find more rhythm, and I believe he will make a bigger impact.’
With 101 points in 81 career playoff games for Colorado, Rantanen was a consistent scorer during his time with the team, tallying 64 points in 49 games before his trade. Now, playing alongside fellow Finnish players Hintz and Mikael Granlund, DeBoer noted their shared history helps with chemistry on the ice.
‘It speeds up the chemistry when you have familiarity and communication,’ he added. ‘Having Rantanen in the dressing room is beneficial; he acts like a top-tier player, making the integration process smoother.’
As the Stars prepare for Game 6 on Thursday, Rantanen’s adaptive performance reflects both personal growth and an opportunity for his new team. Dallas looks to assert themselves against an Avalanche squad determined to stay alive.
