Millwall and Montenegro Goalkeeper Matija Sarkic Dies at 26
The football community is mourning the tragic loss of Matija Sarkic, the highly talented goalkeeper who represented both Millwall and the Montenegro national team, as news emerges of his untimely passing at the age of 26.
Originating from Grimsby, Sarkic embarked on his football journey within Anderlecht‘s esteemed academy before transitioning to Aston Villa in 2015. A dynamic career followed, with loan spells at various clubs including Wigan, Stratford, Havant and Waterlooville, and Livingston, before Sarkic’s move to Wolverhampton in 2020.
During his time at Wolves, Sarkic showcased his skills through 60 appearances across loan spells with Shrewsbury, Birmingham, and Stoke. In August last year, he joined Millwall, where he made a notable impact, featuring in 33 matches for the London-based club.
Sarkic’s international endeavors were equally significant, debuting for Montenegro against Belarus in 2019 and later earning a place in the national team’s setup. His ninth and final appearance for Montenegro occurred on June 5, as they faced a formidable Belgian side.
In an official statement, the Montenegro Football Association expressed deep sorrow over Sarkic’s sudden passing, highlighting his cheerful demeanor and contributions to the national team. The Football Association of Montenegro extended heartfelt condolences to the Sarkic family, acknowledging Matija’s pivotal role in Montenegrin football.
The Professional Footballers’ Association and the Football League joined in expressing sympathies to Sarkic’s family, friends, and colleagues at Millwall and the Montenegro national team during this profound moment of loss.
