Missouri Defeats Vanderbilt 30-27 in Double-Overtime Thriller
The University of Missouri narrowly secured a 30-27 victory over Vanderbilt University in a double-overtime Southeastern Conference (SEC) game held at Faurot Field. The Missouri Tigers, now 4-0 for the season, managed to hold off the visiting Commodores in a matchup primarily characterized by missed opportunities and stout defensive plays.
Missouri’s kicker, Blake Craig, rebounded from two missed field goals early in the game to make a 38-yard attempt in double overtime. This ultimately proved decisive after Vanderbilt’s kicker, Brock Taylor, failed a 31-yard field goal attempt on the subsequent drive, ensuring a Missouri win.
The game remained neck-and-neck throughout its duration, with both teams exhibiting resilience. Missouri quarterback Brady Cook completed 23 of 37 passes for 226 yards, paired with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Luther Burden III in overtime. The Tigers reached the red zone twice in the second quarter but had to settle for a field goal in one instance and missed the attempt in another.
Vanderbilt, now 2-2 for their season, displayed persistent defense with key plays by Randon Fontenette and Langston Patterson, which resulted in stalled Missouri drives. Despite this, their efforts were hindered by Taylor’s missed 50-yard field goal in regulation and again in double overtime.
The Commodores capitalized on a Missouri turnover with a successful 57-yard field goal by Taylor at the end of the first half, helping them lead 13-10. However, a powerful 64-yard rush from Missouri’s Nate Noel in the third quarter set up Marcus Carroll’s short touchdown run to help the Tigers regain the lead.
Quarterback Diego Pavia of Vanderbilt completed 11 of 19 passes for 157 yards, including a significant early 65-yard touchdown pass to Joseph McVay. Pavia also contributed a critical long run that advanced Vanderbilt into scoring position multiple times.
Missouri’s scrappy performance, though marred by errors, marked an important SEC opener. “We’ve got things to work on, but our resilience came through,” said Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz post-game. The Tigers now face future SEC challenges with upcoming games against Texas A&M and Alabama.
