Mitch Marner’s Upcoming Free Agency Creates Buzz Among NHL Teams

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As the NHL offseason approaches, fans and teams are turning their attention to Mitch Marner, a skilled forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Marner is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2025, and many teams are marking their calendars.
Since entering the league, Marner has established himself as one of the NHL’s top talents, with three 90-point seasons and a 100-point season under his belt. However, the pressure on him intensified following Toronto’s playoff struggles, where they were unable to advance beyond the second round during his tenure.
Now, with a lucrative contract opportunity ahead, speculation is mounting about where Marner may land. Columbus Blue Jackets‘ general manager Don Waddell is leading the charge to attract Marner to Ohio, seeing him as a key player to complete their rebuilding phase.
Waddell has expressed that the Blue Jackets are committed to winning, and with over $40 million in salary-cap space, they have the financial means to secure Marner, who may demand a lucrative deal exceeding $13 million annually.
“We’re going to look for high-level reinforcements, and a player like Marner fits that bill perfectly,” Waddell stated. The Blue Jackets recognize that having Marner could immediately elevate their roster and bolster their scoring lines.
Despite the competition, which includes teams like the Chicago Blackhawks and the Anaheim Ducks, Columbus is making its argument clear. The appeal of playing in a less pressured environment than Toronto, where Marner has often faced criticism for playoff performances, may also entice him.
“Columbus has a lot to offer—it’s a great place to raise a family, and the team is on the upswing,” Waddell said. “We believe we can be a playoff contender.”
Various NHL analysts predict that Marner’s next contract will not only impact his career but also reshape the dynamics of the teams vying for his services. The potential for bidding wars may drive his price even higher, amplifying the conversation around his value in today’s market.
As for Marner, he’s reportedly weighing his options carefully and considering what environment best suits his career aspirations. “Every player wants to win a Cup, but it’s also about finding the right fit for yourself too,” said a source close to Marner.
The next few weeks will be pivotal as NHL teams prepare to make their pitches to Marner, setting the stage for what could be one of the biggest moves in the sport this summer.
