Cedar Falls, Iowa – The MMCRU Royals are set to make history as they compete for their first-ever IHSAA Class A state title on Thursday. The unbeaten Royals, holding a record of 12-0, will face off against the Saint Ansgar Saints, also 12-0, in a highly anticipated championship game at the UNI-Dome. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

MMCRU has demonstrated remarkable prowess during the 2025 playoffs, scoring a total of 143 points while shutting out opponents. In the Class A semi-final, quarterback Eli Harpenau led the team to a decisive 28-0 victory over West Sioux, throwing for 202 yards and four touchdowns.

“It just really goes to show all the preparation and hard work you put in throughout the season to be here finally,” Harpenau said. “We just have to go out and perform to our highest and go win this thing.”

Senior receiver Michael Schmillen has been instrumental, catching three touchdown passes in the semifinal, contributing to his season total of 32 receptions for 555 yards and 15 touchdowns. Running back Brayson Mulder has rushed for 695 yards with seven touchdowns this season.

The Royals’ defense has been nearly as impressive, recovering 15 fumbles and recording 27 interceptions throughout the year, with senior linebacker Wyatt Alesch leading the team with six picks.

Saint Ansgar, aiming for its second state title, will rely heavily on its ground game, powered by senior running back Korben Michels, who has amassed 1,497 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns this season. The Saints have collectively rushed for over 5,000 yards.

MMCRU’s head coach, Kyle Oswald, emphasized the importance of execution leading into the game. “We’re focusing on film study and practice preparation. We know what it takes to win,” he said.

The matchup promises to be a thrilling display of offensive strategy and defensive intensity, as both teams aim to capitalize on their strengths. Weather conditions at the UNI-Dome could also play a role in the gameplay, with fluctuating winds and cooler temperatures expected.

With both teams fighting to make their mark in state history, the stakes are high. As the clock counts down to kickoff, anticipation grows for who will emerge victorious in this titanic clash of unbeaten teams.
