Montana Grizzlies Face Idaho Vandals in Exciting Top-10 Rivalry Matchup

MISSOULA, Mont. — The Montana Grizzlies are set to renew their historic rivalry with the Idaho Vandals on Saturday, marking the start of Big Sky Conference play under the lights at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. These two teams, ranked No. 5 and No. 8 nationwide, will kick off at 8:15 p.m., with the game being broadcast on ESPN2.
With a perfect 3-0 record this season, the Grizzlies are looking to prove themselves against a tough opponent. “Idaho’s always been good,” said Griz head coach Bobby Hauck. “They have a long, successful football tradition, and I was disappointed when they left the league. It’s great to have them back, and they’ll be hard to beat this weekend.”
The Vandals are currently 2-2 under new coach Thomas Ford Jr., with both losses coming by just three points against FBS opponents Washington State and San Jose State. Their returning roster is showcasing their competitiveness in the Big Sky.
Grizzlies quarterback Keali’i Ah Yat noted the significance of the matchup. “It’s always an honor to play in a rivalry game. It’s important for us, no matter who we face, especially as we start conference play,” he said.
Idaho boasts one of the top rushing offenses in the league, led by quarterback Joshua Wood, a dual-threat player who presents challenges for opposing defenses. Meanwhile, their defense has been recognized for its strength and physicality, a point emphasized by Hauck. “I think they play hard. Their front is tough, and they’re pretty physical,” he said.
The two teams last met in 2023, with Montana securing a win. However, Idaho was victorious in their last encounter in Missoula in 2022. As these rivals prepare to clash once more, the stakes are high, and the atmosphere is expected to be electric.
<p"It's a great opportunity," expressed Griz linebacker Peyton Wing. “Their offense is very talented. It’s a great test for our defense this week, and I’m very excited for it.”
