Montgomery Plans Events to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Montgomery, Alabama is gearing up to honor the life and work of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a prominent figure in the civil rights movement. In commemoration of the federal holiday dedicated to him, various events are planned throughout the city.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. served as the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in the 1950s and played a crucial role in several civil rights events in Montgomery during the 1950s and 1960s.
Some of the events taking place in Montgomery include the MLK Birthday Celebration at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church and the HandsOn River Region MLK Day of Service & Remembrance, which will be held at various locations.
Another highlight is the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade, a vibrant display of unity and celebration that will take place in downtown Montgomery. Additionally, the MLK Birthday Bash will be held at 300 Jackson Street, offering an afternoon of festivities.
The Cleveland Avenue YMCA will host a Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 15. Furthermore, the Equal Justice Initiative is offering free admission, allowing visitors to learn more about the struggle for justice and equality.
The following day, the AUM Reflections Breakfast will take place at the AUM Taylor Center, providing an opportunity for attendees to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy.
