NBN Co Proposes Fivefold Increase in Internet Speeds for Millions of Australian Homes and Businesses
NBN Co is considering a significant speed boost for Australian households and businesses, aiming to provide a fivefold increase in internet speeds without added costs to retailers. The proposal targets users connected via Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) technologies, potentially revolutionizing connectivity for millions of Australians.
Anna Perrin, Chief Customer Officer at NBN Co, highlighted the surge in data demand and usage over the past few years, with the proposal set to address the evolving internet needs of consumers. The plan envisions delivering superior download speeds through the nbn Home Fast product, promising improved video conferencing, gaming experiences, and faster downloads.
According to NBN Co, the proposal is expected to benefit an extensive portion of the population, with plans to reach around nine million homes and businesses by the end of 2024, with further expansion to over 10 million premises the following year. This would cover approximately 90% of NBN’s fixed line network in Australia.
Michelle Rowland, the Federal Communications Minister, commended NBN Co’s initiative, emphasizing the crucial role of reliable and high-speed internet as essential modern infrastructure. Rowland expressed support for the proposal, aligning with the government’s objectives to enhance digital connectivity across the country.
For the proposal to materialize, NBN Co will engage in consultations with internet retailers, seeking feedback on various implementation aspects and the required in-home equipment for the speed enhancements. The company aims to accelerate the availability of the increased internet speeds, benefiting both households and businesses alike.
